Destination: Zadar

Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West, in Florida, applauded at every evening. – Alfred Hitchcock

The city of Zadar is the fifth largest city in Croatia and is located on the Adriatic coast. Full of historical and cultural monuments, historians believe that the city has more than three thousand years and that its construction began around the Roman Forum.

Full of archives, museums and libraries, Zadar is home to literary, musical and architectural treasures, as the oldest university in the country (1396). It was in Zadar, long ago, where the first Croatian novel was written and also where were produced the first newspapers in Croatian language.

The symbol of the city is St. Donat’s Church, right next to the Roman Forum, but more and more the city is becoming known by a recent work of art: the Sea Organ. Designed by the architect Nikola Bašić the project was planned as part of the revitalization and reconstruction of the city after World War II.

The Sea Organ is now one of the main sights of the city, the main idea of the project is to unite nature and urbanism. The waves interact with the structure creating random, but harmonics sounds.

Right close to the Sea Organ there is another project of interaction between nature and architecture: The Sun Salutation. This art work has 300 glass plates, under solar photovoltaic modules, which make a symbolic communication with nature. Both projects have the amazing view of the Adriatic Sea and the most beautiful sunset in the world, according to the famous British film director Alfred Hitchcock.
